Description
888 is the symbolic number of Jesus—the sum of the numerical values of the letters of his Greek name derivation Ihsous (gematria):
Ιησους
10 + 8 + 200 + 70 + 400 + 200 = 888
Ιησους
10 + 8 + 200 + 70 + 400 + 200 = 888
According to Margaret Starbird’s book, Magdalene’s Lost Legacy: Symbolic Numbers and the Sacred Union in Christianity:
Clearly the Greeks spelled the name…differently from the phonetic “Yeshua” of his native Aramaic or Hebrew; their motive for their unique spelling of the name was its supercharged gematria, the triple 8. Although the entire Old Testament…seems to be built around the sacred number seven, for the Christian community of the New Covenant, the number eight was of paramount importance. Because it follows the number seven, whose symbolic meaning is tied to the eternal cycles of days first set forth in Genesis and, by extension, all of time, eight was for Christians the number of the new day or New Age. Eight signifies regeneration; the resurrection of Jesus occurred on the “eighth day,” the day following the Jewish Sabbath—literally, the “new day” of Christianity. Baptismal fonts are often octagonal to symbolize “new birth in Christ.” The gematria of the name Jesus (Ihsous), 888, bears the meaning “the epitome of regeneration,” the “dawn” or “sunrise” of the new age, and “resurrection.”
