According to John Nash’s article, The Shekinah: the Indwelling Glory of God, The Shekinah possibly had biblical roots but took definite form as a feminine aspect of God in the rabbinic period and gathered strength through the Middle Ages. The Shekinah was associated with the rainbow, the expression of God’s glory and symbol of his covenant with Noah, with the cloud and pillar of fire that went before the Israelites during the exodus, or more abstractly with the Holy Breath or the Holy Spirit.
